1.6 to 8v gti

hi was just wondering if anyone knows of any good sites or has any info about doing the conversion, know i could go and buy a gti but already got the valver and as a first car i had a mk2 1.3 which eventually changed to a 1.6 and spent a fair bit getting all the bodywork to like new so dont really fancy buying another when got this one in such good condition, so any help on possible problems would be appreciated, got a scrap mk2 8 valve gti ready so just after a bit of advice

I am fitting a 2.0 8v to my 1.6 driver.  if you car is post 1988  the gti engine loom will plug straight into the fuse box    you will need fuel pumps  a lift pump in the tank and the main pump underneath the carwith the  fuel filter  and the injection fuel lines  there is loads of info on clubgti forum

Best way to do it is find an engine with loom that matches the wiring spec of your car.  Post 1990 the electrics were changed to CE2, easiest way to tell is to check the hazard switch, if on the dash its CE1 if on the column its CE2.

But don't bother building something you can buy, fit a 2.0 bottom end while you're there, or better yet a 2.0 16v ABF

Unless you REALY love your car its not worth it, as theres a whole load of stuff that the GTI has over the 1.6, plus insurance will be cheaper for a std GTI than a modified 1.6!

P.S. Hienz, the electrics changed in 1990 on MK2s

cheers for the help guys but did spend a lot getting the bodywork tidy so dont really want to lose the shell, the cars are a 1987 1.6 and an 89 reg bv gti, already got an "uprated" suspension and obviously going to convert the brakes, engine and box, cheers for the advice though, much appreciated

rubjonny is not wrong, it is a pain in arse converting a carb car to injection  sorry about getting the year wrong was getting mixed up with fords

got to say its painful to hear you saying that you want to keep the shell etc..  its far easier to buy the GTi and make that a tidy shell...  shed loads of pointless work to make it a Gti

Well since the GTI is an early spec like your 1.6, all the loom will swap over no bother.  Once the engine is out the loom isn't that bad to remove
I'd drop the tank, pumps & fuel lines off the GTI and swap it straight over to the 1.6, that way you don't have to split any of the fuel lines or mess about swapping anything.

Fair few weekends work, but you shouldn't have any serious issues.  I'd still hunt out a 2.0 8v 2e bottom end from a MK3 or Passat, and shove it in at the same time.  Oh and its an ideal time to fit PAS as well

thanks for advice re bottom end swap but my first job is to get engine in and running.The donor car engine has digifant system fitted and this is my main concern. What are the problems to be encountered and overcome in re wiring it into my car.The donor car starts and runs well but (and this does puzzle me) the engine management is disconnected and is situated above gearbox on chassis member contrary to where I thought it should be(see pic). I would be grateful for any advice and pointers as what to do and not to do thanks
