1.8 8v p.b engine loom/fuse box????
« on: 28 December 2006, 20:51 »
Can anyone HELP?
Ive got a 1985 8valve gti which has now got a shafted engine    and was thinking about fitting my mates pb digifant 2 efi engine  but have been told that I might need to change the engine loom and/or fuse box, is this correct?
I have also had a good look in scrappy and found that a 'G' reg gti had the same fuse box as a mk3 golf, vento, corrado etc.
Any advise will be appriciated

your goner need the full engine loom, ecu, and even then im not 100% sure youll be able to put it on ya exising fusebox, plus the fuel system pump etc... isnt the same i dont think.
it should be ok to use a newer board but ill be honest ur probably better off not using a digi and replacing it with the same lump.

Dont need to mess about with the loom, simply swap all the old engine bits over from the old engine.  The lump & head is basically identical underneath all the gubbins.

1. Unscrew the fuel injector inserts and swap them over, you need a large allen key.  Oh and fit new injector seals while yr there, dirt cheap from GSF :)
2. There should be a WUR on the front of the old block, unbolt this along with the mounting bracket & swap.
3. Swap the dizzy over
4. Can use your old gearbox or the one off te digi, whichever is in better nick.  Put a new clutch in, and replace the input shaft seal, and the pushrod bush & seal.
5. The coolant flange on the front of the engine is different, if your old one is metal get a new seal and fit to the PB head, if its plastic get a complete flange from VW and swap the old sensors into it.
6. Rocker cover is also different I think, get a rubber gaskit kit from VW, it comes with new studs so swap those on as well.  Oh and if it has a PCV valve on the old engine, get a new bung for it.  Think this may only be for Digi lumps tho...

Edit: gotta be more I've forgot, but you'll see whats different when the time comes :)

Cheers guys some great advice.
However I need to replace my fuse box and part of loom due a fire that broke out when the engine went, don't ask coz I don't no! All I got to say is I'm glad I bought that fire extinguisher.  :smug:

All I need to know now is does it matter which loom or fuse box I use for this engine? As Ive located one locally from a 1988 car which has got the same fuse box as mine. Is it just the loom that VW changed when they introduced this new fuel system?

Thanks in advance, John.

well the engines changed from k-jet to digifant around 86-87, yours will be a k-jet and the 88 will be a digi, which means the engine loom will be completly different.  Depending on what part of the loom went up in smoke you may be ok to use it though, and the fusebox will certanly be the same.

If I were you I'd stick with k-jet, its not worth the hassle of fitting a digi lump, they're a hassle to get running right and arn't any different to a k-jet.
