symptons of faulty MAF?

hi all.

i am suffering from poor fuel consumption and sometimes jumpy idling on my 1.8t. are these symptons of a faulty MAF? or may be another sensor?

Hi Dunzo,
                My MAF has been playing up on my 1.8t and mine is fine when i just let it idle but when driving it seems like my turbo has fell off!! and there is just no power also the car seems to wana cut out when slowing down.Try cleaning your MAF mate because i cleaned mine tonight and it's back to normal now!! have you got an induction kit fitted?

how did u clean ur MAF? iv read so many different ways u can do it:- stick it in a bag and swoosh it around with electric cleaning liquid or spraying it. i think i book it into a garage to connect it up to vag com to see if it is faulty first before i do any thing cause i read its better to replace it as cleaning is only a temporary fix.

no induction kit but want to get it remaped badly!

I cleaned my MAF with carb cleaner, just remove it and give it a spray!! Im not sure but i dont think that a faulty MAF will always show up on vag com as being faulty, but as i say im not 100%. The reason i asked about if you had a induction kit or cai is because my MAF only started to play up since i fitted one.Its very common for MAF to go tits up i think!!! so don't worry your not on your own!!! Do a search on the site for any questions you may have you will normally find the answer. :smug:

Faulty MAF sensors tend to effect the entire rev range rather than just the idle. Clean it up anyway and if it still misbehaves the next most likely fault is the temp. sender.. but it can't hurt to run a diagnostic check on it with vagcom since it could be the boost solenoid which will show up as a fault.

My motor 'stutters' in 1st and 2nd when the engine is cold unless I rev it some, would this be a symptom of MAF needin cleaned/replaced  :huh:

i have the same problem jbh, stutters from cold in 1st and 2nd gear. took it to the garage but did not have vag com, instead had a hand held device which he hooked up to the port. it showed something about the turbo pressure and maf but after clearing it and driving round the block the device did not come up with anything. strange?!  :huh:

any thoughts?

anyone with vag com around east london?

I belive that you can do a simple test.
1. Start the car, let it idle for a while, see if it fluctuates and if it's ok
2. Turn it off and disconnect the MAF
3. Start tge car again and let it idle, if it smoother and doesn't jump about it's certainly the MAF.

I think though, if you disconnect the MAF the engine warning light triggers so you need to get it re-set.
