Hi folks,
Bought my 'new' Golf GTi Cabriolet 8v 1988 (E-Reg), white with blue roof, last Thursday just before Christmas. Always wanted a GTi when I was younger, specifically I wanted a Mk2 16v Oak green, but just never got round to it, then this one came up so I grabbed her. The previous owner (Wife's best friend) was gonna trade it in but garage only offered her £100, so she sold it to me instead. The gearbox is really whinning, her mechanic said she would need a new gearbox quite soon as it was well on its way out. I've had a bit of a read around and it seems I should be able to pick up a new gearbox for about £50ish, plus I'll put in a new clutch at the same time.
I wish I'd taken some pics before I started work on her. It had sat on her drive for the last 2 months (started 1st time), and was really dirty. The roof which I belived to be black, had quite a tinge of green due to all the moss. Anyway, after several hours cleaning/scrubbing the roof it turned out to be a dark navy blue colour, a couple of minor holes, but all in all the car looks really good, considering what I paid for it. The only rust I've found so far is a piece about a third of the way up the drivers door, hopefully that'll rub down and not be too big a deal, as I've mentioned it's white in colour, no metalic paint, hopefully it'll look fine after a bit of paint.
Wheels are really nice, 7 spoke 15", think they are what's known as 'Rivage' wheels - very little kerbing on them.
I'll get a pic or two up over the next couple of days...
Thanks
Rog
