sticking clutch?
« on: 25 December 2006, 23:59 »
Hi Guys

can you help?  I have recently noticed my clutch pedal sticking.  basically once you pressed it, it wont return and its a case of sticking your foot under it to drag it back.  Seems to be ok sometimes but is more common in the morning.  Is the clutch on the way out or does it need a dab of WD40?

I have the same problem myself although mine started differently. Clutch was fine but got a warning on the dash that the brake/clutch fluid was low, topped up and checked for leaks and found the clutch master cylinder (attaches to back of pedal) to be leaking.

I fitted a new master cylinder and then the pedal started sticking on the floor in the morning, thought I must have not bled the system properly so did it again (with a pressure bleeder) but the problem remained. Got so bad just before Christmas that I could not drive the car - pressing the pedal would not release the clutch.

On further investigation I found that the clutch bleed valve on the gear box is also leaking - not sure if it was at the same time as the master cylinder or if it has just started but looks like all I need is a couple of rubber O rings to sort it.

If you have no fluid leaks in your system, try bleeding the clutch, if that does not work, it is likely your clutch master cylinder is starting to fail.

I have come across exactly the same problem with an Audi and it was the clutch master cylinder failing.

Hi Guys

I went to see my very trusted mechanic about this today and he said that I require a clutch kit?   There is no leaks and I told him about bleeding the clutch bleed valve and master cylinder he said he didnt think that would help.

Is replacing the clutch kit a big job? and what in your opinion should I do?

Thanks

Regards

hi guys common problem this, more than likely its the cluctch master cylinder, once it has dropped to the floor once, it will only get worse and could get to the stage where it will not come back up, its about 2hour+ job if all goes where, maybe worth a call to vw if yours cars are just out of warrany.

I work in a vw and audi dealership. Anymore questions i be happy to answer them.
