mine seem bright enough, but the other bulbs would always seem better, if your looking at cars with xenons thens thats why u might think there not as bright, or youve got them dipped to low....

My headlights (2000 model) are pathetic, not compared to xenons, just most other cars I've driven.  And my headlights are clean..........

I would be most interested to know if changing the bulbs makes a big difference.  One little theory I've come up with is that the headlights on Gti's are set up the same as none Gti's  - ignoring the fact that the Gti sits a little lower than the standard model.  Only a little theory though......

Due to the fact that my passenger side headlight bulb had blown, I spent a little time looking around the net for replacements that would offer some extra brightness. I found a product review of H4 +50% bulbs on Autoexpress (I know the golf needs H7) which highly recommended the Super Brilliance high performance headlight bulbs from Halfords. See link below:

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/products/products/203966/bulb_test_h4_plus_50_per_cent.html#

I bought a pair and am very impressed with the clear, bright, white light they provide . Even better, they are currently on offer at buy one get one free, making them £19.99 for the pair. Only problem is they make the sidelights look so yellow and dull in comparison

I think the same can be said for all mk4's. My g/f recently bought a 2000 1.6 mk4 and I find it scary to try and drive quickly in the dark on dip beam. You just can't see quite as far as you need to. One thing to check is you haven't nudged the height adjuster next to the dash dimmer, I thought that might be it but they were already on the highest setting!!!

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

Perhaps some new bulbs are in order then.  I should say that full beams are fine, its just when they are dipped they are mince, as tobz said you cant see as far as you need to.

I notice a few have said theirs are fine, maybe it would be worth posting the year of 'birth' to see if there is a difference between older / newer models.

Just read with great interest posts on our beloved Mk 4's lighting (or lack of it ). Totally agree with all comments and was specifically interested in the item on the headlight beam adjuster on the dashboard of the Mk4s 'cos I think mine's jiggered !. Can anyone say as to whether the motor that actually adjusts the lights up and down is controlled by a fuse ?, and if so which one and is it in the main Fuse-box , or cunningly concealed in some totally inacessable area .Refering to the "Bible" ( Haynes ) gives not a lot as regards this item . A fuzzy photograph shows the rear of the headlight cluster and the removal of "something " concerning ( I think )the motor but the text doesn't give more than the usual :"refitting is a reversal of this proceedure ".No info on testing or anything like that. Also  question :are there two motors ? One on the nearside as well ? I'm saying this because as we all well know , the battery sits on this side and to gain access to the rear of the lamp is a battery out job.......a bit of a pain .Any help from anyone on this would be much appreciated . PS on this...I noticed the "inoperation " of the beam adjuster fairly soon after having fitted Lower Fogs to my buggy .I linked them through the existing Fog/Spot lights in the Headlamp cluster very carefully (I thought ) but I'm now wondering if I've bu**+%+d something up . As said above any suggestions gratefully received . Gordon . ..Golf 2L GTi 2001 5 door Hiline AQY engine
