ECU soldered or plugin
« on: 25 December 2006, 00:31 »
I have a 2001 GTI 1.8t
How can I find out if the ECU is soldered or if it can be plugged out without actually having to look.

Not sure what you mean - are you asking if the ECU is soldered to the car wiring rather that a plug type connection or is it the circuits inside the ECU you mean?

I leave in Jamaica and I want to change my chip. There is no dealer in Jamaica that does this to my knowledge. Thus I would have to Fedex the whole ECU to say Neuspeed or APR if the chip is soldered unto the ECU. If the chip is not soldered unto the ECU and can be plugged off, then all I would need to do is order my new chip and plug it in when it gets here, thus no car downtime. So the question really is, is the chip on my GTI soldered onto the board or can it be plugged out and how can I know without looking into the engine.

Ahh, I see what you mean. As I understand it, they don't actually fit replacement chips anymore as a performance upgrade. Instead they plug your car into a computer via the diagnostic plug (above the ashtray - behind the trim panel) and upgrade the software that controls the ECU.

Not sure if this can be done by sending the ECU itself.
