poor mpg on my 1.8T
« on: 23 December 2006, 13:25 »
hi all,

just bought my 1.8T and love the car . i am getting very poor mpg on my average mpg reading . it is below 20mpg when cold and when warmed up it only reaches 26mpg.

is this due to the cold weather? or could the reading be inaccurate?

thanks in advance.

I've only had my 1.8T a week and I get better readings than that. Unless your not out of 2nd gear I'd reckon readings must be wrong, but I ain't no mechanic!

Cheers

it depends how you drive it i have a 1.8T 1999 and round town i get 20-24mpg but on the motor way from bounmoth to london i get 35 mpg, but i did this journy today and trying realy hard to save fuel i got 43 mpg. so if you get that low mpg on the motor way i think you have a problem

I reckon check your air intake for blockages and see if you have any splits in any of your breather hoses, I had a tear in one and it was well hidden away but when I found it and replaced the pipe I was getting much better mpg.

check the lambda sensor usually a culprit where fuel consumption is concerned. if you know someone who has a krypton diagnostic machine they'll be able to compare the reading to manufacturers data, if its kaput there pretty easy to replace, but quite expensive.

I know they caused a lot of fuel consumption irregularities amongst the bmw e36 communtiy

How many miles you gettin gon a full tank? Only had mine just over a week but not sure what to expect, done 260 so far and still got a couple of notches left in there, combined mpg thing reading around 27-28mpg
