smoother gear change

when i change gear on my mk4 it sometimes feels a bit reluctant to engage gears (especially 1st). on my old mk2 i fitted a weighted gear shift rod which made the gear change feel really smooth. does anyone know of a cheap way of making the mk4 smoother?

could try replacing the gearbox oil although vw say they dont need changing ever, my manual says after 60,000m may make a differance
