Mine is knackered due to water from the rear washer. You can test the switch by switching on the ignition and see if the door open symbol comes on the dash panel when you open the hatch (make sure your other doors are shut)

If you dont have this symbol on the dash, open your hatch and then lock the car - wait for the alarm to arm itself then see if it senses the open hatch and sets it off.

on closer expection i seem to have a slight crack on the end of the pipe that connects to the butt of the rear washer, hence water is leaking out the side not too much but still dribbling out, now i have a major problem how do i fix the little crack or can i get a new pipe? please help am really pi$$ed off now.

i was thinkign shall i cut the end of the pipe off say 1 foot fromt he end and then get soem pipe joint and fix the new one to my existing pipe using pipe jhoint watertight stuff? otherwise u cant fix a hair line crack

Mine was the same, the connector pipe was cracked and this was a new one fitted by a VW dealer! I removed it and binned it.  I had some washer bits lying about off another car so used these. The bits I used were an in-line connector to connect the old hose then using another bit of hose, fitted it 2 the in-line connector then fitted the hose (of suitable diameter) directly to the stubb on the motor.

so did u get another pipe bit off another golf mk4 and then just do a in lien connection, what sort of connection did u use, for plastic pipes? am thinkign of trying to wrap the slightly split connector with duct tape (gaffer tape) tomorrow and see what happens , duck tape the silver stuff is meant to be watertight.

I used parts that I had (well my neighbour had) I think that were removed from a scrap Volvo! The plastic inline connector you can buy from Halfords etc.

Hopefully the rough diagram will give an idea as to how I did it (sorry its a bit rough, had a few beers )

Forgot to add, the new hose was a very tight fit over the connector on the motor - I opened it out a bit with a philips screwdriver so it would push on easier. I then fitted some rubber fuel hose over it and then fixed it in position with a hose clip of suitable diameter for the fuel hose.
