Peculiar problems
« on: 20 December 2006, 15:05 »
My Mk3 GTI has picked up a few odd problems this weekend. First, Friday I turn the ignition off and notice that the temp, petrol and rev gauges are all jumping (looked like the minute hand on a wall clock when the batteries are low). Secondly, Saturday night the central locking refuses to work. Always used the key fob (aftermarket alarm) but suddenly alarm goes on but no locking. Wont operate off the key or while inside. Any one have any ideas?

Change your battery first mate.

Battery? It fires up fine though. Must admit it hasn't been run much lately, been walking to work. If its run a lot/battery changed. Would the central locking come back?

well I'm not an expert, but the temp has dropped lately and that's what kills batteries. You might be lucky that your engine catches first time. At the very least, get down to a battery shop and get your battery 'load tested' (even Halfrauds can do this). It would seem to me that you've got some kinda of sparky related gremlin and it's as good a place as any to start.

If your alarm still arms etc, it might be because it's got a battery backup (and THAT battery is ok?) but the car battery hasn't got enough juice to pop the motors in the doors....? Dunno exactly, but get it checked first chap.
