Rusty Sills?

Just about to buy a very clean 90k Red Mk3 GTI 8v 96 plate... The only thing putting me off is two rust spots on the door sills, one on each side in exactly the same place, centre of the door under the door rubber.  The drivers side is the worst with about 1-2 inch of rust with bubbles paint over the top, I managed to push the key through the centre of it.  I would normally walk away instantly but the rest of the sills are fine and so is the rest of the car.

I'm planning to spend a bit if cash on the car in the usual areas and I don't mind getting the sills repaired providing it's not going to cost a fortune!  Any idea how much it would cost to repair this and would it constitute an MOT failure?  It has just passed it's MOT (last week) so I suppose I got a year to sort it.

Any help would be much appreciated! :undecided:

I'd just walk away, plenty more MK3s where that came from!  Don't make the mistake of being sucked in by a nice looking car, I did and ended up with £300 worth of welding underneath :cry:

that just a common problem on mk3 most of them will go like in the end. for a car that  is that old it aint the worst thing to be doing is it. if rest of it solid then iwud go for it

Mine had a problem in one sill, rest of the car was fine. The body shop cut it out, welded in new plate, ground it off and resprayed for £100.
Like opel says common problem in Mk3 BUT like jonny says check the rest of it first.

I had this on my passenger sill (has been redone twice and still not right), but rest of the car is sound. I have seen plenty of mk3's with the same problem, a bit of an "Achilles heel" me thinks!

Thanks for all the advice guys, I  went to see another one today which had none of the sill problems, had slightly less miles and was a 16v :grin:, so I went for that one!  I think the other one was just waiting to be a money pit...
