conversion help!! ;)
« on: 16 December 2006, 23:47 »
well guys im already bored with the 1.4 engine in my mk3, a few weeks ago we replaced our mk3 gti engine with a newer one due to the cambelt snapping, im now thinking of re-building the old engine and putting it in my 1.4 but.................

how much will it cost me for the valves etc.. that the cam belt snapping may have bent, also what other damage may it have caused?, would the 1.4 4 speed box line up with the gti engine and finally what else would i have to change to make the engine go in?

was just wondering with having a "spare" engine, a few of the lads reckon the gearbox may match up to the engine but also how it would be geared on a 4 speed box would make it silly fast on take off but not as quick top end? or would it just smash the box to bits first time i pull off?

cheers guys

a 1.4 Mk3 with a 4 speed box? is it modded? must be, the cambelt going is really a whole engine job, pistons, valves, headers, possibly cylinders, pullys too, head could be warped i suppose doubt it though, if your up for it unless you really, really know what your doing i'd take it to a specialist modding garage, for the labour it will cost and the guarantee it will give the pros will outweigh  the cons especially as it is going to cost enough just to sort the engine, which i am hoping is the 8v otherwise the labour will be probably more than 2 brand new mk3 engines!  This is why the rule, new decent quality(dealer if poss!) cambelt every 50k or so and you should be ok is a good one to live by, buy a second hand car and have no cambelt history, if you value the car, do it anyway. As for the box which is confusing a 4 speed would probably not hack it neither would the clutch if you were planning on changing that or not as the pressure would be, i would say to heavy anyway. your quite likely to rip your driveshafts to bits too if they are worn at all and dont expect the fuel pump( if its in the tank not too sure) to be up to it either.  in a perfect world though yeah with a 4 speed box it would go like the clappers.
