facory immobiliser problem.
« on: 16 December 2006, 17:28 »
You can probably see from my name i own a mk3 golf cabrio. caused me a few problems, none too hard to sort out except this recent one, had dizzy changed as garage suspected a hall sensor problem (£120!) and as I expected this didn't fix the problem as the car was sound WHEN it ran, and is still is fine, WHEN it starts. after lots of reading other peoples problems and a few helpful emails i was right to begin with in thinking it was an electrical/immobiliser fault. now the problem. I'm skint. is there a way to just bypass the ignition decoder thing around the ignition barrel. its not the key transponder by the way, I have tried another key provided with the car. the problem is intermittant but seems to be getting worse, it always starts but not for long (2 secs max) you can rev it, push it, tow it if you wanted i suppose but it wont go! in the summer i wouldn't mind sitting there half hour listening to it die over and over but in the winter its getting pretty old pretty quick.

it depends on how many points the immobiliser is connected to
ie starter / fuel pump / ignition (could be more)
you would probably have to disconect them all

don't have a clue, its factory fitted like i said so finding that info out it proving to be pretty difficult and i don't particularly want to demobilize the car all together! from the decoder ring fitted round the ignition barrel it looks like only one thick black wire probably about 8 gauge but it could be casing for more wires the wire dissapears into the dash and i cant find it popping out again, i don't really want to have the dash apart without good cause and info because i know the problems associated with this, especially with newer cars, nova's are easy as are Mk1's and Mk2's(escorts and golfs!) i wont touch anything French or anything newer than about g reg its always like a huge jigsaw puzzle.

since no one else has replied ill update myself!  i have found the reader coil or the immobiliser control box is the cause, what i was surprised to find is the immobiliser has its own ECU hook up and fault finding codes and kit, have to get this checked. other than that wrapping the data cable in foil!?! may alleviate the problem in the short term.
