Loosing boost - possible knackered Turbo? Help!!
« on: 14 December 2006, 14:48 »
Hey-oh

Last week the dreaded little light shaped like an engine came on for no apparent reason, car was running perfectly, sounded healthy etc.  Booked it into the garage anyway to get checked out and the earliest I could get it in was today.  Have been driving about in town for the last week with no hassle whatsoever, except for last night when I went for a blast down the dual carriageway for about 15 miles.  When I came to a stop, I realised the engine was idleing badly, wanted to cut out then revving up to about 1.3k.  Stopped and did my business for about an hour, went out and she started perfectly.  Same performance when I had to stop at the first roundabout coming off the dual carriageway on the way home, but when I got to my flat and parked - no problems.  Wasn't too worried as it was going into the garage today.

Just had a phonecall from the Garage to say that the car was ready to be picked up, the reason the light was on was because I was loosing pressure between the turbo and the engine.  The guy said he couldn't see any obvious leaks and he had cleaned out all the breathers but they looked OK.  Also said he had renewed all the clips etc on the hoses.  The scary bit was when he said that if the light came on again I would have to take the car to VW as it could be a problem with the Turbo itself.  Eeek.

Anyone had the same experience / thoughts?

Thanks for any info
Ron.

divertor valve palying up?? these paly up and you loose boost/power... cant be seen by just looking as they fail internally... not expensive im sure some one who knows in more detail will shed more light.... not sure why light on though....

Say bye bye

Have you had diagnostic on it to find out what error was??
If the turbo was nackerd it would show signs ie notieably more smoke out the exhaust as you floor it..

The fault was showing lack of pressure between the turbo and the throttle.  So far the light hasn't come back on and all is fine.  Even with the light on the car ran perfectly except for just the one time when it was idling erratically.  Don't know exaclty what the error code was, don't think the garage had full diagnostic equiptment, just a code reader.  I replaced the divertor valve a few months ago with the uprated version so don't think its that.

Would it be a vacum leak perhaps as opposed to a boost leak as its between the throttle and turbo?  Apparantly they cleaned the throttle and all pipes and renewed the clips.  here's hoping thats all it was.  Am starting to think it was just some freak condition that triggered the light.
