Shocks
« on: 14 December 2006, 12:04 »

Guys,

I'm new to the site and need some assistance please....

Have a MKIII GTi 83k miles, I am looking to put a new set of shocks on, does anyone have any suggestions as to best recomendations - don't want to spend an excessive amount as I need to bring back its smooth firm ride again.

GSF - Boge turbo gas shocks.

Oh and if the ride is the main concern it will be the springs that need attention not the shocks. As they determine the ride, the shocks just detemine the rebound. I.E. if you get shorter springs then you might want to consider changing the shocks, to prevent shock leak, and fatigue.

Spax adjustables for me. get a price from Larkspeed.

But as Slick says its probably not the shocks. perhaps if you give us a better idea of the symptoms.
It may be something like the rear bushes???

Bushes are good, just sorted through MOT, have recently replaced front tyres to Nexen N3000 and has some close to limit Goodyears on the back. grip was good and solid handling around corners.

I had a blow out on the better tyre on the rear so replaced both on the back for N3000's
Since then the handling has been appalling, tracking and balance has been done on the car I have even adjusted the tyre pressure, it has been better but now think that it could be the rear springs etc.

Any ideas now?

Funny how the handling changed with the tyres! shouldnt do! So yes the rear springs maybe suspect.

Mine has started going a bit weird a lately...

Ive a Mk4 which has clocked 110k and now when I go over bumps I get a clunking sound from the front and even on a very smooth surface I get everynow and again it clunks sounds like a knocking sound it does it a little if I get out and rock the car back and forth and side to side...

What could be causing this?

Shocks can affect the ride quality, especially if they are knackered.
Also you can actually buy ride adjustable shocks, konis for example.
