Best Engine Oil

Hi,

I have a 1998 1.4 Mk4 Golf and i am finding that it is using a lot of engine oil.  Can anyone tell me what is the best type of engine oil that I can use for my car?  And also a reason as to why it is using so much oil.

Check for leak's, drip's and see if it's smoking from the exhaust!!! This will narrow the reason's down hopefully

How much are you using - for example, how many miles do you cover from when the oil is at max on the dipstick until it reaches minimum. Some cars use a bit and its nothing to worry about - just depends how much.
