Gearbox Problem
« on: 16 January 2004, 20:51 »
Hi,

I have an 8v GTI with64k on the clock.

The problem I have is that there is a noise coming from the gearbox/clutch.

On idle with no foot on the clutch there is a graunching type noise. I put my foot on the clutch and it disappears....The noise is evident on the move aswell but less noticeable..I think!!!

Any ideas....and cost of repair..Please chaps...

Best Regards

Does it do it in any gear?
sounds like a clutch release bearing or a worn gearbox input shaft bearing.
Try changing the gearbox oil to synthetic, this might help a bit if its a worn input shaft bearing on the gearbox.

HIya,

Thanks for the response. I think Its a worn input shaft bearing, however I added some gearbox treament stuff and it made no difference at all.

With my foot lightly on the clutch you can hear a rumbling when driving. I think its still there when my foots off the clutch , but not so obvious

How do I know what it is???

Been quoted 600 for a new box installed and 200 for a new clutch..Don't  really want to spend out 600 on an 11 Year old car

There is a drain plug on the bottom of the box by the diff, the filler plug is on the front of the box. They are both 17mm hexagon plugs.
Refill until fluid seeps out of the filler plug hole.

Another thought regarding the clutch release bearing.
Start the engine and try pulling the lever for the clutch on the gearbox, just do it until you feel tension. If the noise goes then try changing the clutch cable as it is not holding the lever under tension.

Hiya,

Changed the Gearbox Oil Castrol Synthetic --bloody expensive 10pound a litre. Job was easy...No improvement though...

I noticed that I can push the clutch lever down more than 10mm which is stated in the haynes manual..

Thanks for the suggestions I 'll have a look at the cable tomorrow.

I've got a knocking noise coming from my gearbox/clutch at idle - (same thing?) which goes when I put my foot on the clutch. I was told that this was a thrust bearing on the way out. I don't think that it is too expensive to replace, but obviously it is a gearbox-out job.
