Steering wheel locks up when turnng right
« on: 11 December 2006, 11:38 »
Got abit of a problem on my 8v. Sometimes when I turn the steering wheel to the right, it stops turning! I can still turn it back to the left but if I got to do a sharp right turn or go round a roundabout, i've had it. It has started to happen on a more regular basis.

Has anyone ever experienced anything similar and if so, how much did it cost to repair.

1. If it has PAS, replace the belt
2. Check the track rod boots arn't being sucked into the rack

Also does this happen mainly when its wet and raining? If so its definitely the belt.

Deffo the belt then! You can try tightening it but in the end you will need to replace the belt.

Oh yes very scary! first time it happened to me I was coming back from Brighton along the dually that links up to the M27 around chichester and there are loads of roundabouts and normally you wouldnt slow down much if no traffic as you can use bothe lanes like! hmmmm yeah that fine until the steering goes dead and it takes ya a while to realise you need to use more force to turn the wheel!!!!

Took my Golf to the garage today (Mill Lane Garage, VW & Audi Specialists) to sort out the steering. The belt was slipping so they replaced it. Cost £3.88 for the belt and £11 to fit it in + the VAT.

Got exactly the same problem with mine, I was bricking it when it did it to me on a roundabout in the wet!!

At first I thought it was PAS fluid level. Checked that and it was fine. Then I thought it must be an air lock in the system so I bled it. Since then it's not done it but if a PAS belt is only a fiver I might aswel change it!
