What revs is the rev limiter supposed to kick in ?
« on: 07 December 2006, 18:22 »
Hi,
Got a Mk3 8V, first car I have ever had with a rev limiter.
The limiter kicks in about 5100 revs, did this before and after I have had the timing belt changed.
Is this normal ? Is it supposed to be higher than this ? More like 6000 revs ?
The red line is 7000 but I am nearly 2000 under.
Virtually everything I know about the workings of the internal combustion engine can be written on the back of a small stamp with a large marker

All cars have rev limiters but thers no need to take a car that far as the power has most likely dropped off by then, and that sounds rather low for limter i would get the timing checked again.

Quite common this is...I believe it's either the cambelt out a tooth or the ECU is in some sort of "safe" mode.

Yep ^^ most often it's the timing that does that to a barge.

If not cambelt then try disconnecting the battery completely, (both terminals off) for say 15 minutes, this sometimes takes the ECU out of safe mode and resets it. If not then a trip to the VAG dealer.
