2003 Golf GT Tdi 130 Poor MPG
« on: 05 December 2006, 18:46 »

Hi Guys,

I've got a 2003 golf gt tdi 130 with 82,000 on the clock and full VAG history

When I first got the car it would do on average 51-54 round town and 52-59 on the motorway. now from cold its struggling to so 23 ish and when its warmed up its averaging at 32-36 at best.  The moment you put your foot hard down it drops down to mid to low twentys!!

The cars had a new air filter, new fuel filter,  just had its oil changed using castrol slx LL2 0-30 oil.

Its had a new MAF meter from vw,  new suspension bushes and track rod ends, and ball joints and new shock absorbers.

Any one got any ideas  because I'm really scratching my head!!

Is that what your car's telling you? Or have you calculated those latter figures? Could be a problem with the computer reading incorrectly. Try measuring the milage you get from say a full tank and calculate the mpg the old fashioned way :)
That said, if the fuel consumpution has gone up that much, perhaps it's got something to do with that new MAF sensor? Possibly?

Its getting about 310-320 miles to a full tank,  it seems that when you keep the revs under 1500 its economy is about 36-39 and when you start to rev it it drop's sharply off.

Been to my local vw dealer today (Hadwin's at Lindale) and they plugged it into VAGCOM I think and did a 'download' and diagnostics check,  they all came back clear surprisingly!!

They have lent me a brand new in the box airmass meter to try for a week to see if that improves it.

well Guys  fingers crossed

probably don't have to tell you but thats terrible, i got 475 from my last tank of fuel.

nice of them to lend you a new airmass meter, can only hope that fixes your problem

Hey all,

I've been running round for a few days now with the 'Borrowed' MAF.  big improvement- back up to 51-54 mpg now, seems like the old ( 1 month old!) one was faulty when the revs rose over 1500. must have definately been over fuelling higher up the rev range!

Funny though,  the VAG technician that downloaded the car said they was no faults whatsoever with the old maf, and that was what his computer said-  just go's to show that they are infallable!

Regards and thanks for your help

John
