Insuring more than one car
« on: 28 November 2006, 22:42 »
Hi guys, you have all been so helpful already - here is another one for you!!

Im planning to give my 1990 golf a bit of a well earned rest and am going to give it some tlc and use it purely for leisure, I am buying a newer model for day to day use.  It seems to me a few of you on here have a number of cars so what is the cheapest way of insuring them both.

Any help much appreciated, thank you x

Best person to ring would prob be martinb off these forums. He works for an insurance firm so could prob sort you out with a good deal. I know i would go to him if i needed to insure both of mine.

It is still going to be expensive though as they will be running side by side, (i would have guessed about 5-600 for the main car and another 400 for the other.

elephant do this thing where you can insure a second car for 3 months a year on the same policy, i did the same when i had my dads mark 3 8v and my scirocco on the policy at the same time. You do it on a month to month basis so you could have it insured for one month, then not the next then back on the month after.
My point being is that when you need to insure your mark 2 you can add it on for a small fee

I know with bikes a lot of people have multi-bike policies where they have more than 1 bike on the policy, wonder if they do that for cars?

In my opinion its best to keep them seperate.

If your current Golf is only going to be used part of the year and can be garaged securely you could insure that 3rd Party F&T and on a very low mileage. Prob only cost say £300 max.

Linking them is dodgy I was always told.

I have three seperate insurances for all mine and I only get no claims on one of them. They will not pass it onto other policies. My camper and Rallye are insured for limited mileage only, 5k & 7.5k respectively and that's your cheapest option. As already mentioned, ring martinb of HIC (see his posts as his number is on there, or the deals & discounts section) and he'll be able to advise you and get you a decent deal. I don't use my camper at all over the winter months and I personally wouldn't go without insurance on it and I think that's a very bad idea, no matter how secure your garage is.

If you'll do 10k miles a year with two cars, why not split the mileage on each so you might have your insurance for a daily driver to 6k limited miles a year and have your NCD on that and then insure a mk2 with 4k miles a year and then it doesn't matter as much about your NCD as that should be cheaper anyway.

Cheers for the recommendations guys!!

There are a few options i could suggest for you:

*we offer a mirror ncb scheme where you can insure a second vehicle with nil ncb and we will still allow the same discount you have on your main vehicle (subject to you having no fault claims in past 3 years)

*the mk2 is old enough to qualify for our classic schemes now so if its a sencond vehicle on low miles should be very cheap

*we can actually do short period policies (14days to 6months) so that could be another possibilty however these can be costly when you compare the day to day cost with an annual policy

If you want me to have a look then feel free to pm me your number and i will see what i can do!

Gibby - our classic policies have recently been changed so they do build up a NCB so you should start getting some on those now!

We do offer multi vehicle policies but only really for very old classics (ie aircooled) and the drivers must be over 30 (classic too!) and they are a nightmare for me to work out so i hate em!!

Hope that helps!

Martin

Oh yeah, and the second statement, is that for when you have more than one air-cooled vehicle ? Cos I might qualify !
