spluttery vr6

well the strange prob i had a couple of months back appeared on saturday after driving through a puddle.. well i was going slow and it was nearly a foot deep...

but......

last time i replaced leads, looked at this and that and replaced a dodgey fuel pump relay... left it for a few days and problem went...only to return just as ive paid to go drag racin

spluttered home, managed to get it started to get to hardcor3s on sunday (  ) then got it home, went ot goto work last night and it ran like sh!t , coughin spluttering etc and some times cutting out... wasnt like a normal misfire more like it was running out of fuel or something even though i could here the pump running this time....

got it home and had a look today when i got up... cleaned all plugs/leads/multiplugs/sockets/ecu plug the lot with wd40 still the same..... thought id clean the maf so i removed the k+n and whipped it off.. all looked ok but i cleaned it with solvent spray anyways.., under where the maf sits theres a strange little vaccume pump type thing.. the socket on this was p!ss wet through with water, so i cleaned etc, the pump connects to the inlet manifold via a rubber pipe, then from this little pump it goes to some kind of canister under the drivers inner wing near the horn.. then from that to a pipe which goes all the way to the fuel tank??? wtf?? i can only assume its some kind of breather /recycle pump type thing, and i reckon its stopped working causing a vaccume in the tank so fuel pressure is low (misfire) or none at all (cutting out), i disconnected the pump from the inlet tube and plugged it and it ran fine, then i reconnected and the pump started clicking then ran fine also... so i think thats what my trouble is... its working  now but im going to either relocate the breather pipe for the tank like a normal vented car, and remove pump and plug hole or find out what this cannister is and see if thats the prob??

any one else had probs with this??

Its a carbon canister . found this on the web about them

"Carbon canisters are part of the evaporative emission control system, which includes the fuel tank, vent and purge valves, and fuel lines. The role of the carbon canister is to store the fuel vapor generated in the system instead of having it escape into the
atmosphere. The HCs are then burned off by purgingthe canister into the intake manifold when the engine is running."

Did you check your lambour prob sensor that screws into the manifold that would have been submerged in a foot of water and would have caused irratic idling and spluttery acceleration too. :undecided:
