New and confused
« on: 25 November 2006, 15:37 »
Hi there everyone.

A bit of background perhaps - it's actually my daughter who owns the GTi, so I don't perhaps have quite the familiarity with it that you folk who get to drive them often do. (Yes I do like it, and may 'follow her in', but I've got to admit I'm more likely to go TDi, 'cos I hate spending money........)

I'm the one who actually does stuff on it though - perhaps should mention it's a MK2, 16V F registration.

Now, at the moment, I'm trying to set the timing, but am having a little problem, and hoped that someone out there who knows more than me (that's pretty-well everyone!) may be able to help.
I can't get it to trigger the timing gun!
I checked it on another car, and that works fine, but it just won't trigger the darned thing.
Oh, and I also tried a second timing gun.........these are both Gunsons with the old wire connector rather than an inductive connector.

I tried a new coil and it seems to make no difference.

Can anyone tell me where to look next?

thanks
