   Well I went for the MOT today, they couldn't even test it

:undecided: I was sat in my car while the guy took down my registration & chassis number and went off to mess around with his Pc, came back, checked the chassis number and went off again, then another bloke came out, checked the chassis number and went off  :undecided: whats going on? they checked the number about 10 times in the end

Several minutes later the 1st bloke came over and asked a few details about the car, if it was the original no.plate, engine size and stuff then went off again - came back a few minutes later to say that he can't find my car on the system? and if I'd had a computerised MOT before, which I haven't.

They couldn't do the test and suggested I go to the DVLA to sort it out, fair enough I thought but still puzzled by their constant checking of the chassis number I investigated it a bit.

Turns out the chassis number on my V5C doesn't match the number on my car   :undecided:   WTF!!!! I'm sure I checked that when I bought it    Its only the last 2 digits that are wrong, the V5C says 32 on the chassis  its 90? looking at a keyboard 90 is the same keystoke as 32 but with the wrong hand  I really hope thats all it is  :undecided:   I'm going to the DVLA office tomorrow to hopefully get it sorted.

Does anyone know of any way I can check the chassis number of a car to see if its stolen or whatever online

 what a drive though  well worth the effort, well providing it is actually my car  :undecided:

Do you have any previous MOT certificates? If so check those.

Well that strengthens your case that the DVLA have made a simple error when they did your V5 doc at the change over to your ownership!
Go give em an ear bashing!

I shall do tomorrow  its hard to think that it could be a ringer or something as what would the chances be of finding another mk1 with the numbers so close  :undecided: once the come out the factory they can go anywhere in the world.

:undecided: I'm pretty sure they have just made a mistake but all this not knowing is doing my head in  I've put a lot of time & money into that car...

What with all the old MOT's matching the car it sounds like it's all just a simple mistake :)

The MOT database has it's good points but this example isn't really one of them!

my g/f used to work for the DVLA and is still in touch with someone who works there.

apparently they have had thousands of things like this happening. Like you say, just a few wrong keystrokes while data inputing.

I shouldn't worry too much.

Computerisation of these systems is a good thing (I just bought my new tax disc online), but at some point the data has to go from paper onto the computer database, so these is going to be a certain margin for human error.

Go to your local DVLA office and take all the documents, V5 and previous MOTs and actually talk to a person. They seem to be pretty useless over the phone.
