more problems!!!

its a mk3 1.4 96 5spd

out doing the car till 10.30, replacing all the linkage bushes with a mate in the freezing cold. put it all back together and now it wont even try to get into 2nd 4th, but will just about go into 1st 3rd 5th. something appears to be hitting the linkage preventing it from reaching the bottom gears 2nd and 4th.

used the proper tool to align it too.

need some advice please

Why did you change the linkages?
Did you have problems engaging gears before that?
If so it may well be a problem in the box anyway!

I believe it could be the synchromesh causing this, common on vw's. My mates old corrado G60 used to do it, his new golf VR6 does it and my GTi also does it. Get into the habit of popping it in 2nd before 1st quickly!

did you set the adjuster inside the car afterwards? The 020 gearbox in my gti has a collar on the stick, you select 1st position stationary then turn the collar till 1.5mm of play are on the left hand side then lock it up. That sets all gears.

Or you might have a link bar on upside down and its fouling or jamming.

If you know your gearbox code i'll look it up and post the settings for it.
