Accelerator sticking on!!!!!!!!
« on: 19 November 2006, 01:19 »
Had a quite unnerving problem the other night!!!!!  I was stuck behind a learner driver for about 2 miles doing 15mph and as soon as i had the opportunity(road turned into 2 lanes)i floored it and passed the car. As soon as i had got round the car i lifted off the Accelerator, only for the car to keep accelerating  It just kept going and going!!!!!!! I had to drop the clutch before i smashed into the car in front!! When i did this the revs bounced off the limiter twice, popping as it did this before returning to normal again(i hope to hell it didn't damage the engine .

I drove the car very carefully home and checked the cable, pedal and where it joins the throttle body but found nothing wrong at all!!!!!    I have tried to get it to stick open with the engine not running and also floored it a few times since but cant seem to get it to do it again!!!  What the hell happened????

Has anyone else had this problem and more importantly, have they found a cure????

I would get some de-greaser out and clean the cable and the connecter on the throttle body, then cover with white grease to lube and protect it. Could have been dirt getting stuck in.
Also clean out the throttle body, don't know your level of mechanics so excuse if you allready know. Take off the rubber inlet pipe to expose the throttle butterfly and spray carb cleaner into the moving parts and around the join of the butterfly and the inlet pipe. Clean any crap out with a lint free cloth and then when evaporated run the engine. When running spray the cleaner into the throttle body with squirts that are in time with you opening the butterfly...i.e. reving the engine. Put it all back together and run the engine for a few minutes

Also check the trim kick panel next to the accelerator pedal as i had one that came loose and grab the pedal and it held it to the floor (I had this happen and had the same problem as you but in the middle of town on a friday night!!) I think theese are held on with simple screw's and it would be worth checking them..

Cheers mate. I think it must be this as i noticed it was loose a while ago and checked all the other possible explinations and have recently cleaned out the throttle body etc.
