Yet Another Mk3 electric window problem...
« on: 13 November 2006, 11:58 »
Well, my VR6 has some electric window issues.  No suprise for a Mk3 I know, but I've not seen this particular problem around here...

Anyway, the problem lies with the front passenger window (it's a 5 door).  It intermittently stops working, but it seems to only really do it when the weather gets colder.  Usually someone will wind the window down, and then it won't go back up.  If it was only wound down partially, then it doesn't go down either, so it's like no power is getting to the window or something.  If you wait 5 or 10 minutes, then try it, it works.  No combination of ignition on/off, car starting, etc with the switch held down or not seems to make it come back to life, it just takes time.

I knew about this problem when I bought the car, but it was fine all through the summer, and has only recently cropped up again now winter's more or less here.

Problem occurs with the switch on the door, and the one on the driver's door so it's not that, and I'm sure that when I looked at this before I checked and you could hear the relay clicking when you pressed the switch, so would that suggest it's not the relay?

Failing any suggestions, if anyone has a wiring diagram for the plug going into the motor/regulator in the door I'd be grateful, so I could at least get the multimeter on it and see which side of that plug the problem is.  I've looked about but can't seem to find it anywhere.

Thanks

I had a problem similar to this, only the window in my Mk 3 worked fine in the winter and stopped working in the summer.

When the window stopped working you could hear clicking sounds when the switch was pressed.

I checked the connections and couldn't find any problems and ended up changing the motor / window mechanism. It has been working fine since then.

Got tired of not being able to open the window when the weather got warm.

did you replace the whole mechanism yourself?  How easy was it?  I'm a reasonably competent mechanic nowadays (Can happily do oil changes, but don't have much in the way of special tools...), but I don't want to end up with a window that sticks or something because I've cocked it up...

Might have to go dismantle one in a scrappy..

Would really like to get the pin assignments of the plug that plugs into the mechanism in the door, so I can check if the right voltages/signals are going where they should when it stops working...  And see if it works when I just jumper the right wires or plug 12V in somewhere...  Would give me a good idea of where the problem is (though I suspect it's the mechanism somewhere)

Thanks for the reply anyways...

ive just had this problem and changed the motor
the problem that occurs is there is two springs on the motor
think they are some sort of tensioner or something
the bit of plastic that holds them in breaks and realealesthe spring

i couldnt see how to fix it but it is easy to change the motor
took me bout twenty minutes

and dont forget to check the wires behind the front door rubber boot as they break, this is a known fault on mk3s.

The mechanism / motor was easy to change. Makesure you remove the glass carfully. When the mechanism is back in, easier to have a second person helping put the glass back in.

Also take care when removing the door.
