Key fob battery replacement
« on: 13 November 2006, 10:26 »
Apologies in advance for asking what probably seems like such a basic question but how do you open the keyfob to replace the battery. I dont know if its of any relevance but my car is a 2001 2.0cc gti 115bhp. any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Nice easy one, this.  Prise the key apart in the centre with a small flathead screwdriver (or anything similar) - In the centre of the key on the reverse is a small indentation.

Once you have the key in 2 parts, with your fingers, simply just pull the base piece apart (the half without the key blade), & voila, you will then see your battery!!!

Cheers mate, appreciate the help. I managed to prise the key apart no problem but  the base piece doesnt seem to want to come apart very easily. I didnt want to use the screwdriver to prise that bit apart as well in case i broke something is it just meant to just pop open or do i need to apply a bit of force to it ?  You would'nt think i could make something so easy this complicated would ya. Anyway fiddling about with the fob seems to have sorted the problem because its working again now but i'm still gonna change the battery so i'd be grateful for your help again. nice one

Think you need to get down the gym, LOL!

Just a bit of brut force required.  Get both your thumbs under the ridges which will be on one side only of the base, & pull them apart, hard!

My last gym session must have paid off mate because I prised that bad boy open with my bare hands when I got home last night. I did suspect my post would make me look like a knob, & after reading it again my suspicions were in fact confirmed, but if you dont ask you dont know i suppose but thanks again Ivor Mk4 Turbo for bearing with me and replying.

No worries, mate - Not a knob at all.  No point charging in and breaking the key case!!!  Always better to err on the side of caution!
