MK3 Electric Window Gremlins
« on: 12 November 2006, 17:37 »
Hi all,

Right, i've done a search and electric window gremlins on MK3 Golfs seem to be quite common, but i think i have a new problem here not previously covered - possibly!

I'll list the problems individually, but i feel they are all possibly related and can be ruled down to one common cause - it's the cause that i need your help in identifying please.

The car is a 3 Door, P reg GTI

The drivers window goes up when you press down, and down when you press up

When you operate total closure with the key, one window goes up and the other goes down - so passenger window correctly goes up when you lock, but drivers goes down and vice versa

The Drivers window one touch operation (which used to work fine) has now started to only work on the way up - to bring it down you need to hold the switch down (or rather, up, in my brothers car)

The switches only work when the drivers door is closed (is this normal?) On most cars the switches work whether the door is open or closed, but i discovered today that they only work when the door is shut on our Golf, very weird.

Please help as i'm baffled.

Thanks in advance.

Check for shorts in the rubber boot on the inside of the door , and make sure the switch hasnt bee removed at some time and put back on backwards .

hi mate, thanks for the reply.

I'll check the wiring in the rubber boot that's fine.  But how can the switch go on backwards, i took it out and the connector can only go on one way?

Hmm strange , remember that an electric window switch is a three state switch  up/down/idle. Its not like a normal switch open/closed . so if the wiring is the opposite then pressing up will make the window go down .

right and that makes total sense...but i'm just confused as to how the wiring can be upside down as when i took the switch out it didn't look like it had been tampered with..

Could the wiring be wrong somewhere else in the loom... what would be the next obvious place to check before i start taking the door panel off...
