16V Starting problem

I have a starting problem with my 16v. When i try to start my car the engine doesent turn over but there is a spinning noise (i thing that is the starter motor turning over). if i turn the ignition of and then try again it usually turns over the engine and starts but it may take 2 or 3 attempts.
Does any1 know what the problem is likely to be?

Remove the starter motor and check for damage on the engaging splines.

what are the engaging splines? and are u sure its probably the starter motor and not sumthing like else?

the teeth(or splines) on the end of the shaft of the motor engages with the teeth on the flywheel, this turn the engine over.
check the teeth on the motor and flywheel for damage. also check the bush in the gearbox that the the motor shaft goes in is still intact.
