Bought a Mark 3 8V golf 2.0, was the price OK ?
« on: 10 November 2006, 10:16 »
Just got myself a Mark 3 2.0 8V golf on an R plate (1997). Had a 93 Nova before this, so bit of a change getting this.
Wanted to hear peoples views, in terms of price and what might need doing to it, need checking. Any info greatly appreciated.
Its done 139K with full service history up to 2005 - so just dropped it off for a service this morning with an independent VW garage in Manchester. Might need timing belt changing, the guy will have a look.
12 months MOT, 6 month tax.
3dr in Metallic black. Couple of tiny stone chips on the front of the bonnet and 1 slight mark on passenger door. Otherwise no rust / bubbling at all on roof or around back lights which is where I have seen rust on golfs before. All panels seem straight.
Tyres all have good tread.
All electrics work, ABS and airbag light come on then goes off. Electric windows work fine, dont stick. Demister, heater etc work.
Brakes seem fine. Gearbox isnt stiff. Clutch isnt going or slipping. Speed limiter hasnt been altered. Alloys in very good nick. Battery still has insulation blanket thing on it, engine looks spotless.
Exhaust has a bit of a rattle but it just passed MOT.
Took it on 2 test drives before I bought and couldnt find anything wrong with it, except not been serviced and bits on body. Checked it through HPI and all details checked out.
The guy wanted £1500 for it and I got it for £1200, knocked him down due to needing service. I know mileage is a bit high but I walk to work and just want a car for weekends. Do less than 4000 miles a year.
What do you think ? Did I pay over the odds ?
Cheers Mark.

Not a bad price, I've seen cheaper and lots lots more, but if you're happy and you're gonna keep it, stuff the price! Just make sure it's insured for what you paid....

Cheers, insured it for £1500. Ive got 5 years no claims so the insurance was OK.
I saw 5-6 before I bought this one and some where bloody awful - bubbling on the roof and round the rear lights, overheating, one wouldnt even start because the immobiliser / alarm cocked up ! The interior on one was knackered, they had fitted some huge woofer and CD player in it very badly and they wanted £1695 for it as well.
By the way, does anyone know what type of immobiliser is factory fitted to the Mark 3 golfs, is it a Thatcham as this might lower my insurance. Also, is there an alarm as standard ?
Cheers

IIRC there is an immobiliser biult in to the ECU, use the wrong key and you get nowhere. But that also means insurance companies factor this into the price. Dealers could have fitted an alarm to the car, but they vary and most aren't thatcham approved. Best bet is a clifford or toad or similar mate... Have a word with MartinB on here, he'll sort you out an excellent deal on insurance. He did for me!

that's a good price i think, sounds fair as you've got worry free motoring for 12 months.

What was done on the last MoT?

We bought ours a couple of months back also on 139k but we had a little work done to it inc one engine mount, couple of suspension mounts, breather hose, rear discs and pads, full service inc pollen filter and fuel filter, timing belt and drive and steering belt...

otherwise touch wood, the car hasn't touched a drop of oil in 2 months - whereas my 2003 Astra uses sh!tloads...

Our gearbox has a problem with reverse otherwise fine...

So i think you've done well mate..

  • If in doubt, pay someone else to do it!

sounds like a fair one to me. Black 3 doors are the most desirable (or so it seems) so you would normally pay a little more for them but things like havin a fsh are worth more than low mileage. My 1.4 tank has just reached 141k and is still goin *touches wood strong.

thats the best mk3 ive seen..ever! its just clean and subtle..

The mechanic who serviced it said its in very good nick, which is the best news I have heard in ages. He has given me a very small list of things which might need doing, if I want to be really picky. The other car I had always came with a massive list of what was wrong, followed a hefty bill.
Having the timing belt changed next week, the garage said it looked OK but its been on for a while according to the service history so I am not risking it.
Dont think much was done at all on the last MOT.
Cheers for the info.

That's a low mileage mk3 compared to some on here...and the price was right especially for an 97R plate.Regarding the imobiliser which is fitted as standard  it's not thatcham approved so you will need to think about £120 for an immobiliser fitted with cat2 approval.
I remember looking at several before finding a good one (touch wood) most were abused or over rated in the autotrader...

That's a very good price indeed mate for the car you describe  Did you buy it privately or from a dealer?

Enjoy

Bought it off a guy who buys and sells cars - so semi private I suppose.
Spent 4 hours cleaning the bloody thing today, had to vac all the inside (must have been a dog in but it doesnt smell) then clean all the upholstery and trim. Then wash the outside, wax it, etc. Feel knackered.
