I'd have an A4 tdi before a A3 1.6, plus you'll probably get a newer A4 with better spec for your money as they don't seem to hold their values as well as the A3s.
Of those Golfs I wouldn't get a smaller engine one so I'd deffo go for a TDI so either a Bora or a Golf TDI.
I don't really like BMW e36 and they will be quite pricey to maintain.
Honda Civics are probably really reliable etc as per Jap cars but I just wouldn't want one.
Saab's 9 series will be quite pricey to maintain and don't park one in Manchester because apparently the gangs over there always pinch Saab 900 series as their signatures !
For practicality then I guess a Volvo is as safe and as good as anything and they're certainly better looking than they used to be so I'd drive one.

So from my personal opinion and to stop waffling ! I'd look for a decent spec A4, a Bora or a Golf TDI or a decent spec Volvo from that list.

Just take what I say with a pinch of salt though as I own a mk1 convertible, a camper and a Golf Rallye and the most practical out of them is the mk1 !

As Above. Bora Tdi or Passat tdi is really good value, if she can handle the size!

... it's turned into a fashion show for poofters.

Me too looks wise, but you get more car for cheaper money with an A4.

are you talking about a car for a wife or a mother? not nessesarily your mother?

anyway, my suggestion, Mk4 Polo. Any engine size from 1.4 up is nippy, but plenty of poke on the motorway, the 4 door is very practical, can still get 4 adults in or a couple of baby seats, or even a push bike with the back seats down. Get power steering cos otherwise it'll be heavy for parking.
I had one in Dragon green, twas a great little car, thoroughly recommended.

You'd easily find a Polo for that budget too.

I know, we're so transparent !

Hey Dinx, when we were in Leicester I took Han for a spin in my cab with the roof down as it was quite a nice sunny day for this time of year and then I remembered why I love(d?) it so much. Not sure I want to sell it now, so I'll just have to see how my finances go.

its true, i need more car for the money, bigger cars go for less money on the used car trade cos less in demand whereas polos and a3 go for more money than golfs or a4s and passats!

Getting one cos mum keeps complaining about the car she has at the mo, its a renault ( which i dint  buy mind) and now cos ive bought a few cars and a few for my friends, she trusts me buying one!

normally she doesnt mention anything bout cars but said sell the renault and find me a car! so thats what im gonna do. Have to see how it goes, not ina major rush but just like to see the market.
