vr6 gearbox problem - 5th gear

did a search but no luck

I cant select 5th gear in my vr6. Its like the gearstick alignment is totaly out.

gearbox is fine but i have to find 1st and 2nd gear slots.

3rd gear is where 5th should be so im guessing its something to do with the bits under the gator cover and the cable needs adjusting (well i hope)

Does anyone have a picture or etka diagram for the bits under the gear gator?

What position should the lever be at the gearbox end when its in 5th.

About a month ago I had the same thing happen to me on the way to work. Reverse was 1st gear, 1st was 3rd, no reverse at all etc. The bad news was that it was the selector forks inside the gearbox, so I had to get a recon 'box. May not be exactly the same thing but sound similar, but I know of other people that have had this happen and it was just a nut missing off the gear selector mounted on top of the gearbox. I paid £550 for a recon 'box with 2 year/24k warranty!

Had similar probs with my other car. I messed around with the linkages for ages, but turned out to be selectors as well.
I was able to get a secondhand box and fit it myself.

was the notorious bolt at the end of the box. Looked tight but was loose.
