New gbox fitted
« on: 04 November 2006, 00:11 »
Had a recon gearbox fitted today after the old one blew up last week!!!

All i can say is wow!! For a start, its just nice to have a box that doesn't groan in the first 3 gears!!!!!! I also didn't realise how much play the old box had in it.  Whenever i lifted of accelerated there was loads of play and jerkiness, i thought it was engine mounts but with the new box, all play and jerkiness has gone    It also feels quicker, especially in 3rd gear. Went out for a blast in the sticks and was pretty shocked how quick it went from 40 to 80 in 3rd!!!

All i can think is that the old gearbox was so worn that it was soaking up loads of power through all the play in the worn gears.

On another note!!

A mate of mine has just bought a very nice 1 lady owner FSH 78000 MK3 8v. It is totally mint with no visual wear inside at all!!!!!!!!!  I drove the car and it drove like a new car with everything feeling tight and new, no knocks or squeaks from anywhere. In all a very nice drive.  But,      it didn't feel anywhere near as quick as mine by a long way!!??  I'm fairly sure mine is standard apart from a drilled airbox(which did actually give me some good gains mid range!!!) Oh and the fact that mine seems to find another power band at 4000 rpm!!!!! All i ever read is that the 8v gives up at 4 grand but mine seems to find more power there and then all the way to the red!!!!   Whats all that about?????  Is my car chipped???? or is it down to the higher mileage(looser) over the newer lower mileage(78000)golf that makes my car so much quicker?

my 95 8v has only got 68k on it and seems to be loosening up nicley now. I've been using shell V petrol for the last few months which does seem to make a difference. it also easily hits the redline, and a bit more, without any fuss or struggle.
I've actually started to really love it again after just getting used to it and having no real comparison with anything else until my g/f bought a 2001 yaris T sport a few months back. on paper the yaris is 1.6 secs faster to 60 but i really can't tell that it is.
I like driving both. the yaris has that modern car feel and is dead nimble and flys above 4k revs ,but my mk3 is so much more solid and a much better motorway cruiser.

 best of both worlds.
