HELP - Car wont start
« on: 01 November 2006, 17:27 »
The problem: Car turns over but no start.

car - mk2 golf 8v

Background info:

So far ive replaced the plugs, HT leads inc the one to the coil, Dissy cap & rotor arm & spanked in a new battery with no joy.

There is no spark from plugs to cylinder 3 & 4 and my rev counter doesnt work.

Fuel pump primes for a few seconds when ingnition is turned into position 2 then stops - as it should.

I think my next port of call is the coil???

Any help greatly appreciated.

Does the pump prime for a few seconds, or run continuously?

Got spark and/or fuel?

Pump primes for 3 or 4 seconds, 1/4 tank of BP Super & No spark to Cyl 3 & 4.

ok I'd look into the ignition switch next, try turning it 1 click, then running 12v to the starter trigger terminal (one with a black/red wire.
If it runs, the start position is screwed :)

Hi, thanks for your reply.

What makes you think my problem could be the ignition switch??

How do I test it?? Sorry to sound dim but im not a tech head & cant really follow your instructions.

the ignition switch can sometimes fail and prevent a spark when you're turning the engine over :)
If you switch the ignition on, then run a wire from the battery +ve to the terminal on the starter motor with a black/red wire, then engine shoud turn over.  If it then starts then the cause of the fault is likely to be the ignition switch :)

Seems strange how you get a spark on cylinder 1&2 but not 3&4. Do these cars have a hall sender? Could this affect things? If John's suggestion doesent give results id look at the coil next.

I read that to mean no spart at all!  If it only sparks on 1 & 2 I'd suspect the hall sender or dizzy if the dizzy cap & rotor arm have already been changed...
Turn the engine over with the dizzy cap off, does the rotor arm wobble about?

thanks for the replies...im 'borrowing' a coil from a mate tomorrow & getting a miltimeter tonight to check the current one.

rubjonny - can I just whip the cap off & turn it over or do I disconnect HT leads 1st??

just whip the cap off, only need to turn it over briefly to verify its spinning true.
