Speedometer delay

The needle is very slow. As you put your foot down it takes ages to get to the actual speed then when you slow sown, the needle keeps going up. I did 120mph round a roundabout when driving the car back from the garage!!! never been that fast in any car! Phoned the garage and they have said I need new clocks! Does anyone know if there is anyway my clocks can be fixed rather that getting new old ones? As the mileage will be different.

replace the speedo cable first, or try spraying WD40 down it and rerouting it in the bay.  On my 1.6 Driver I ran it along the bulkhead and it made the speedo a bit smoother. Spray a bit of WD in the back of the speedo too, certainly wont hurt to try anyway!

Failing that you'll need another speedo, but it isn't hard to change the milage on them after you take the face off ;)

yeah its just had a new cable. Will try the wd. The garage told me its really diffucult to change the mileage?

PM me when you get your new clocks, don't want to post it publicly really.  Though MK1s & 2s are a bit old for clocking to be a problem now :grin:

Have you got the correct gear on the end of the speedo cable which goes into the gear box?

I assume so, the gearbox had to come out as something came out inside it that made the speedo not work at all. They fixed that and since then the speedo needle has been so slow. But I assume they know what they are doing as they are a vw specialist garage. You never know though I suppose, should I check with them? What should I say as I have no idea about these things  :rolleyes:

ah yeah that sounds like the gear fell off the end of the cable, not suppriseing as they only clip in place. Well yeah they should know what they are doing and it might not be anything to do with this. But i think there are three types of plastic cogs that go on the end of the cable into the gear box. I know there is a red type, geen type and apparently a white one. These different colours represent what size engine the cog is suitable for, so if you have the wrong one if can make the speedo go slower or faster. i found this post in another forum, "Had a quick look at ETKA and they only show the white and red. Describing the white for 1.5-1.7 litre engines and the red for 1.5-1.8." Hope this helps
