« on: 29 October 2006, 17:59 »
as above, the high mileage vr6 180 odd k is gettin sloppier in her old age, 3rd gear is getting and @rse to find and need this sorting in the next few weeks, gear box i think is fine, there just seems to be alot of play in the gear lever its self, from side to side and back and forth, i know the vr6 is cable shift is there any points that come loose or wear that i can sort out?? am gonna have a nosey tomorrow but any help would be good.... the diff/gearbox whine has increased over the 10 weeks ive owned it now, im checkin the oil level tomorrow as im sure its running dry as the previous owner who had it for 3 years totally neglected it..

had an hour spare today so i thought id look into sloppy gear selection before i track it at cadwell next weekend, 3rd gear is the most difficult to engage, so i put it in 3rd and got my daughter to wiggle the lever whilst i checked out the coupling from the cable shift to the gear box under the bonnet.... all ok, the aux lever on the selector shaft works all the gears same as the cables so no probs there (bit of wear but at 181,000 miles i think you expect that lol ) , so that lead me to think the problem be gear lever end, so i prised off the cover and checked out the lever mechanism, bit worn on the 1 to 2, 3 to 4th movements, but its the side to side movement to find each gate thats the problem, then i noticed, the pivot point of the actual lever for side to side movementhad broke a circlip + washer so thats why it wasnt going where i pionted it (sideways) just held the lever over to the right where it should be and all felt tight and dandy so im gonna pop to work and get a new circlip and washer in the morn and bung it on... then hopefully 'quick as i can 2nd to 3rd' gear shifts will become possible rather than a 3 second pause and fumble to find it...

ill take some pics in the morn so you can see what im on about....

also gonna fill with oil tomorrow as im sure shes running dry... diff whine gets louder by the week .... lol
