No heat from heater
« on: 29 October 2006, 12:04 »
mk2 Gti 8v PB G reg

No heat from heaters, the car doesn't have a 'stat in, as wthere wasnt one when i bought it,and after replacing it, it kept pissing water out the header tank.
And when we tried we broke the waterpump aswell
Got a new stat to put in,are these problems related?

Tim

Sounds to me as though the screw on cap on your header tank may be dodgy. You may also need to bleed and refill the coolant, run the car up to temp with the header tank cap off and the heater controls right over to the hot side, check coolant level when the stat activates and the bottom rad hose becomes warm. You could squeeze the pipes as well at this point, you may be suprised by the amount of air which escapes through the header tank.

The bit where if you put to much water in it overflows....is this the correct tank?

I'll try the screw top off my old Driver..

That is the header tank. That should be filled to between the MIN and MAX marks on the bottle :)

As above the header tank or expansion tank is the plastic tank that sits in the rear right hand corner of the engine bay and it sounds as though you mite be over filling it, it would be worth trying a different tank cap as they can fail and then the system wont pressurize properly. If you've got the heater by-pass valve on yours that could contribute to the heater not being warm as it restricts the amount of water flowing through the heater matrix.

get a new cap, it sounds liek the seal has failed so either its venting pressure too soon, or not at all!

From what you describe you have the later round header tank, which have a funky overpressure design which vents coolant away from you and down, rather than the older tank which would just spray it everywhere
