moving from a mk3 8v gti which mk4 sould I get?
« on: 28 October 2006, 19:47 »

Selling my mk3 and looking for mk4s. Is the 1.8T the one to go for? I understand the 1.8T is the most economical and tunable compared to the V5 and VR6. Which handles best as I am led to believe the mk4 handling is slower than the mk3. I suspect the standard gti is probably slower than my mk3. I would buy a diesel but they there seems to be a price premium. Any comments or links to threads that might help would be appreciated. Surely this question has been asked before but I can't find it.

Turbo or no-go!!

ps Standard 180 bhp turbo will be quicker than the V5's & not far off the V6's (in the dry).

The non-Anniversary 180's can be had for the same money as the 150's, too!

thanks folks, thought the 1.8T only had 150 bhp, from when did it get 180? The V5 still looks good but I understand it has a heavier block which effects the handling, is that right?

I really must learn how to spell or use spellcheck, sould? Martyn like your mk4 not sure about the 18''rs4s, they look too big or is that just unhip of me, talking of unhip I was also looking for a ford f###s as they are supposed to be more reliable, are mk4s unreliable?

mk4's arent unreliable, tbh any brand of car has faults and the mk4 golf is one, along with every other mk of golf theyve made!!!, if there serviced and looked after by a owner who sorts things rather than 'lives with it' then youll get a good car, standard mk4 handling isnt fantastic but its isnt sh@t either depends on what your used to driving to compare it with, i went from a mondeo, to my mk4 gti, and the handling was ok, then i lowered it on springs and it was better... then when i fitted coilovers and up rated anitroll bars it was fookin great but you do suffer in the comfort stakes...

as for engines the 1.8 20v turbo is the engine for smiles per miles and for your wallet, the others take lots of cash to get super speedy unless you have money for a r32 etc outright... lol
