Hesitency under acceleration and idle

My 8v has been playing up recently when idleing it jerks a don't know if its a miss fire, or not.  Also when you pull away from junctions etc. soemtimes there is no power at all this is becoming a little dangerous as a "quick pull out on to a roundabout" often becomes a "very jerky slow craw onto a roundabout, resulting in a near miss!"  Would changing plugs and ht leads be the first thing to try or dose it sound more like the coil or maybe fuel system? thanks, in adnavce for your help

seems like quite a few people are having this problem-

try changing the fuel filter first maybe that will help/maybe some injector cleaner- you may have some crap in there somewhere casuing a blockage.

I'm having the same probs.

Changed ht leads, spark plugs, dizzy, fuel filter and fuel pump - still no joy next step coil (kerching)

If u rev it so it goes over 5 on revs then it kinda clears it up for me. Prob not good but does the job - for now anyway  :'(

Mk2gti8v - i'd go straight for the plugs, leads, distributer cap and rotor arm - cheap and easy to do yourself (get a haynes manual aswell if your unshure)...  

I reckon one of these is the most likely cause, but changing all at once is always a good idea..

U could also chuck some injector cleaner in your fuel tank...

See if this lot works first, if it doesn't then look into fueling or other ignition problems..

a new fuel filter is cheap too...


golfgal - a new coil isn't expensive and is also easy to do yourself...

This is a problem I'm having at the mo too   Going to change the plugs and leads tomorrow, done dizzy cap, rotor arm. One thing I did notice not long after a bought the car was that the lead from coil to dizzy had melted. Hopefully changing the other leads may help.

might be the idle stablization vavle causing problem . could be dirty . try put it in a tub of petrol , swill it about, do the same again leave it to soak for a bit . then try refitting . it might work!!

my car was doin this. its also a 8V

i noticed when idling a little spark was coming out one of the leads so i replaced that. It was a bit better but not completly

After looking for a while i noticed a stupid thing.

One of the air tubes had come away so i wasnt gettin the right mixture in. Pushed it back in and the car now runs perfect.

Well i pleased to say i've fixed it, just a simple plug change and all is well.  Got the HT leads on order from VW so i will replace them as well.  I also got some carb cleaner cleaned out the ISV works a treat no more hunting.
