If its gone its not worth fixing.  Just get a 2nd hand box and fit that in.  8v boxes are very cheap in fact i gave one away a while ago.  Really easy to fit as well.

How much for a 2nd hand box and where can i get 1 from? I was told that it is an easy job to swap the syncro or is that not the case?

I wouldnt pay any more than £50 for a second hand box :)
Edit: Unless there was proof that it had been rebuilt recently, and even then I would want to drive the car with it.

Just on a side note, I have heard it is very common on Mk1 and Mk2s, for the second gear to get a bit "clunky" when the engine is cold.

I have had two Golfs before and they both had the same problem.

1st thing to try is drain the oil and refill with redline MTL, this can sometimes solve it :)
