Strictly speaking you kind of have been driving a 4x4
R32 4 Wheel Drive, although is the Haldex system any good from that respect?

Yes the haldex system is very good - it seems they have improved it over the years as our first car that was equiped with it seemed a little slow to react (01 V6 4 Motion) - with the R32 is seamless and does not "clunk" in and out
