Anyone got the ipod link?
« on: 21 October 2006, 10:58 »
I've specced my new GTi to have the factory fit Ipod link and out of interest I droppped into VW with my Ipod to try it out on a Golf Match (eeesh!)

Whilst neither myself or the saleman knew what we were doing, the system just seemed to throw out random tracks and could in no way access all songs on the ipod.

Is the system any good once you get the hang of it?? Please comment....

Had the iPod link since I got the GTI in May, never had any problems.

It behaves like a CD changer, with the controls for CD1-5 being the first five playlists on
the iPod and CD6 the entire contents of the iPod.

It doesn't display artist/track details, and you can only navigate sequentially through
the tracks in a playlist (unless you use the 'Mix' button on the head unit).

Thanks for this info Kev - no wonder we couldn't figure it out just by fiddling! I notice you have lifeshine, how do you rate this?

I've had the iPod link a month, and Kev is right, although mine sometimes comes up with 'No CD' and needs to be reset.  I did hear that the headunit will only play the first 99 tracks and then had to be reset too.  Mine came with lots of little plastic brackets that could be used for all different shaped iPods in the armrest.

The headunit only displays track numbers up to 99, but it does continue to play if you have more than 99 tracks in a playlist, the track numbering starts at 1 again (i think)..... don't think the track numbering is much use anyway.

As for lifeshine, it always has a nice shine (if it's clean), and it seems to prevent the bird crap damaging the paint.  Was hoping it would make it easier to wash the squashed flies off, but don't find that it's much help.... you think it's clean and once you dry it off there are shadows, but they do polish off fairly easily.

Does the link charge the Ipod?

yes the link does charge the ipod.  you just leave it there and forget about it.  I installed an aftermarket ICE-Link in my sisters clio and it seems to function exactly the same.
