You are best advised to go to an independant, and use their Snap-On diagnostics computer for 1/4 of the fee.
Obviously the VW Dealers will not let you have a go without charging £50 plus VAT ! or more and then some bull**** as they guess what it may be, because the forman technician is away, or on training or something.
The latest Snap-On diagnostic computer has the latest software updates. When I borrowed one from a friend who owns an independant Workshop, it takes 1 minute to connect and 2 minutes or less to get the answer. Actually it gave us more info than a VW Dealers kit did, in the West Midlands, but then ....I only saw mpv's or base models in his stock.
You have to know the fault codes, and you have to be fully conversant with the components that react incorrectly when they are faulty, or intermittent.
You might find some old kit on Ebay, but then what will it do for you ? it may tell you what you may know already ! because it's past-it's-sale-by- date, and no good for modern EM systems....Huh.
It makes some folks mad when the Dealers charge too much for diagnostics, they could offer a cheaper service, on the basis that you then buy the components from them and then fit them yourself.
I regret to say that many city VW Franchises these days work on the basis that many owners don't know where the oil filler cap is located ! - they have a captive market of incompetent customers or others who charge the service to company expenses- so who cares about 1% of folks like you ?
Sorry mate, I'm just having a moan :angry .
If you find a Franchised Dealer who is genuinely interested in Power and performance, buy a few parts there - yeah
