Be Gentle With Me...
« on: 18 October 2006, 23:56 »
Just done a deal on an 06 plate, delivery miles, Diamond Black, 3 door GTi, trading in my ageing V5 Toledo.  The Tolly's been a faithful, if sometimes unreliable motor.  I've bought the GTi over the phone from a car supermarket so haven't even seen it yet and have to wait ten long days for delivery.
In the meantime, what advice can anyone give me?  Any good insurers? Preferred dealers for servicing in the Glasgow area (my local SEAT dealer were good - would I be mad to take it there?).  Also, what's my best way of connecting my mp3 player to the (standard) stereo?
Anyway, I've had a good look round and this seems like an excellent, friendly forum,

cheers

Hi there and welcome to the Mk5 section

Nice choice of car - you wont be disappointed!

What type of mp3 player do you have?

How much did they give you for your Toledo btw?

Cheers

If you have an ipod then VW have a standard ipod connection kit to the standard stereo which is OK, but not as good as separate Alpine head unit ones. It is £150 fitted and you basically get access to your first five playlists and then all tracks but it doesn't display track names etc.

With regard to connecting the MP3 player, I had my mk5 GTi set up today so I can link my MP3 player.

I bought a connects2 AUX adapter for www.raysmith.co.uk for about 40 quid, and then took it to my local car audio dealer to have it fitted. Cost me 2 hours labour to have it fitted and the cable routed under the centre console, coming out in the cubby hole in the centre arm rest. Looks really professional and sounds a treat.

MP3 player won't charge through this link, neither can you control it from the head unit, but I expected that and I'm chuffed to bits with it.

Hope this helps!!

Gaah; the email notification didn't notificate me you guys had replied to this!  I was thinking you'd all ignored me too.  Thanks for all the replies; here's mine...

It's an Archos AV440 - video/mp3 player so I'm not too bothered about charging it, just getting some noise into the stereo.  I'll take a look at that AUX adapter - cheers GTi Golfer.

I've managed to persuade Direct Line to reconfigure my quote and it's not too bad.  I'm in Coatbridge Scotty4, so I'll try Verve Wishaw when it comes to servicing.

The Toledo booked at £2600 but all I managed to squeeze out of MP was £2150.  I'm not too bothered; it's not a car I would have sold to anyone who knew where I lived if you know what I mean! It's had it's problems but it's still a lot of car for the cash - I seriously considered replacing it with another for a while (as well as an S8, an Elise and a VX220 before the Golf.  Not too good at making my mind up...).

cheers again for getting back to me - I'll need to check the forums properly in future!
