would you use a kwp2000 to remap witha custom map
« on: 18 October 2006, 10:04 »
Hi,
I have been looking at getting my car remapped and have come accros these on ebay. I understand by reading some threads on here that it isn't a good idea to use a generic map on your car but one of the companies that is sellin this will also sell you a custom map for your car for an extra £25.
You need to read your map then send it to them, they will then send you back a custom remap of your car and you upload via your odb.
In all that means it will cost approx £100- £125.

The other thing to consider is that the kit also contains the software for doing diags on your car, airbag sensors, abs etc.

Would you stay well clear or give it a go.

The thing that puts me off these is the price.
If these things are that good, why do people like Revo do remaps for about £400?
I just don't know if I'm being nieve, or if you get what you pay for... I guess the only way of really knowing is suck it and see.

i dis - agree, its only a computer program when all said and done, once revo have designed the map, thats the hard work done, all they then do is squirt it into your ecu, and charge you £400.
i can't comment on this guy from ebay, but you can get re-maps for around the £200 mark that are just as good as revo.

someone on here got there diesel remapped for £170 from p-torque.

Yeah. Revo will remap a 130pd to 180 and close to 400lb/ft, i think - and they also do a try before you buy - all things that will cost.
However, I do agree with what you're saying - I only quoted Revo because I couldn't remember any more companies!
If you try it - or if anyone else tries the guy from ebay - let me know? I'm all for saving cash

TBH thats what I was thinking, the only real reason I can think of paying the extra is just in case it does go wrong, if it goes wrong and you've paid somebody to do it the its up to them to fix it. However if your paying £300 extra it might be worth taking the chance.

If any body knows anybody in the North West who will do it for around the £200 please let me know as I would pay that but not the revo prices.

Thanks

I would steer clear of these kwp2000 kits, I have repaired around 10 ecu this year alone from guys who have tried to remap there own cars with these kits.
The main problem is you are buying a tool which has been cloned with cheap internals made in china which makes the programming very unstable, the original version of kwp2000 is around 2000 euros and even that wasn't the best of tool to flash ecu's and failed quite often.
Professional tuners use far more superior equipment to flash your ecu which costs £1000's, and have the knowledge to repair to ecu if anything should go wrong.

Also to write custom map takes hours of work and no real tuner would do this for £25!
All you would get is a poorly made map which potentially could damage your engine.
