cahnging Gti walnut interior
« on: 18 October 2006, 09:57 »
Good morning everyone.

I have just purchaced a Mk4 golf GTi T 4 door with a walnut interior. at the moment i can't afford to purchase the R32 brushed aluminium interior and have managed to take out and spray the stereo surround pieces silver as an experiment and have done a good job even tho i do say so myself!!  :nerd:

But i am having trouble with the ashtray lid and door handles, what is the best way of removing them? the reason im doing this is because some of the door hanles are cracked and spoil an imaculate car.

After 15 years of restoring old fords buying and driving this car is like coming out of a bed n breakfast into a 5 star hotel, i will never look back.

thanks for your time

Alan

Ash tray lid .. open the ashtray, pull out the bottom liner, there is a screw underneath. Undo that and the whole ashtray will come free, be careful not to snag the wires for the cigar lighter as you pull it out, just unclip it. The lid itself is a complete arse to remove, you can see how it's attached from underneath once the whole tray is out but it's still very tight, you have to slide it off.

As for the door pull inserts, can't really help you there im afraid as i bought the whole brushed ali kit which comes with a complete new door pull, not just the insert. However i'm sure with a bit of encouragement you can tease the insert out of the handle if you remove the whole thing first.

Just out of curiousity, what are you doing about the walnut gear shifter?

hi everyone.

now the dust has settled it will pass but its just not quite the right look as brushed aluminum  :embarrassed: it looks a little bit too cowboyish if you know what i mean but my mates say its passed the test. ill get some pics and try and put them on here but the best way is to save up i feel.

the gear knob ill just replace with a genuine one i think, but if I'm going to do that i might as well do the rest!!

still cant tease the passenger door trim off altho i sprayed the drivers side by taking out the whole unit and spraying it that way.
