What 1.6 lump is it? But you would be mad not to fit a 5 speed box to the 1.6 engine while you're doing it!

well i havent actually got the 1.6 engine yet, so i suppose im asking what would i need :), i wont personally be carrying out the work, that job will be up to my bro lol.

bit of background info for those who are wondering why i would want to do this, basically, i can only get insured upto a 1.6 at the moment as ive had my license less than 1year, but my 1.4 is too slow and has a oil leak and seems to be burning quite a bit of oil and has done almost 130000 miles now, but the body work is in good condition and i really like the shape and feel of my mk3 , so a new engine would be perfect :)

anyway any more advice would be great.

you won't get insured if you put a 1.6 into a 1.4. it'll be classed as a modified car and they'll laugh at you i'm afraid.

sell it and buy a 1.6

depends what insurer you go with, HIC just changed it to the insurance bracket of the car the engine came from when I did my 2.0 bottom end conversion.

We still need to know what car the 1.6 is from, as there are several block designs which will determine how hard/easy the job is going to be.

ah ok , i didnt know there was different engines and such, my bro is the mechanic but he's never done anythin like this with a golf , but has done with other cars.

well i have been looking at other similiar aged Petrol (mk3) golfs , as i assume that would be easiest ?

if not do correct me lol, im wanting to take the easiest route :)

The MK3 1.6 is I believe a small block like the 1.4, so it should go in ok.  Get the gearbox to go with it though, your old one will fit but the ratios will be wrong.  Plus like I said earlier, you'd be mad to take the engine out then fit a crappy 4 speed box in

You'll need all the inlet & injectors etc.  The main problem you'll come up against is the 1.6 lump will be MPI, but your 1.4 lump will probably be SPI, so you'll need to swap all the ECU & injector loom over as well.

It would be easier to just buy a 1.6 ;)
