Compression test results and stuff......
« on: 14 October 2006, 18:33 »
Hey evry 1

I'm the proud new owner of a GTi Mk2 8v Digifant and new to the forum, so Hi to all.

A few probs so any suggestions would be great.

Was blowing lots of oil smoke when warm (not from cold), but not when powering on - just when reopening throttle after having throttled off (eg down hill, around town, at the lights, after gear changes), and also steady stream at idle.

Cleaned mesh under the rocker breather (full of crap), flushed with Forte, oilchange Synta Silver, VW oil filter, put an air filter in (wasn't one when I checked!!). Now it is MUCH better, but still light blue smoke...... sounds like stem seals?

Compression test results (before flush and oil change):

POT        DRY        WET
1            130        140
2            120        140
3            130        140
4            130        150

Mechanic thought that this was OK and not suggestive of piston ring probs - Wot do yoo guys fink??

Also, it was idling fine b4, but now after cleaning breathers and putting air filter in, the idle can be erratic especially at start-up. Either wibbles up and down from say 800-1100rpm or races at 2000. Usually resolves aftera couple of mins driving tho.

But hey, the wipers and heater work and its better fun than me old Astra.....

Welcome... I think youve pretty well answered your own questions! and yes, your valve stem seals are probably the likely cause of smoking..
Your engine idle speed rising and falling (hunting) is likely due to air being sucked into the engine, probable cause is a split pipe, or a badly fitting hose on the induction side of the engine, listen carefully for a sucking/hissing type noise from the engine...

i've also just had a compression test, mine came in at 185 183 182 182, with no improvement with the wet test, mine is a 16v, though so don't know if the compression should be much higher than an 8v?
otherwise your compression looks well down and will need new rings.

ARSE BIsCUITS!

Hav to try and verfify this with an 8v owner. Does anyone out there know wot the figs shud be for an 8v?

I've heard that they are lower compression than the 16v, but surely not by that much?

Brad mentioned in an old post that he'd had his tested and the results were good (not specified) - Hey Brad, wot were your compression test results, and shud there be any increase at all on wet??!

Compression ratio of an 8V digi is 1:10, although I'm not sure what this means in terms of actual psi. Incidentially, I thought the value's aren't supposed to be different between pots other than about 1-2psi...?
So, if that's true... I'd agree with rowlers.

tbh the smoke when letting off the gas pedal is a sure sign of fooked rings... if it doesnt smoke first thing on start up (most common valve stem seal indicator) i would suggest engine wear
